Back yards, fences, neighbors....

As you can see, this is a brand new privacy fence.  Right up against our old chain link fence.
We will never see Mr. Joe OR his back yard ever again.  Mr. Joe died a long time ago, but while he was alive, he would stand at the fence and talk to the kids.  When the new neighbors put this fence up, I wondered what Mr. Joe would think.

The new privacy fence totally changed the feeling in my back yard.  I can hear dogs bark, but I can't see them.  The breeze has changed....and of course, it feels closed off from the world now.  Another neighbor built a privacy fence right after this one was put up.  They had a yellow lab.....now we just hear the bark.    Privacy fences can be nice.....but there is a time and place for chain link fences, too.  Or no fences at all.

I do NOT like those fences Sam I am. I always refer to them as "fortress fences". They are rarely seen around my neck of the woods thankfully.

When I went on a trip to CA with my husband, they were EVERYWHERE! Even teeny tiny yards had them.

Not very neighborly if you ask me. I think they are very sad. :(

With a new fence think of all the garden whimsies you could hang on it -- wreaths and bird feeders and flower boxes and trellises and old signs and boxes and... :)

Well, you're both right! I don't like them either because they shut out what little bit of visiting goes on in neighborhoods.....AND I could hang 'stuff' on it......

We have a yard with a privacy fence and I have to say I am glad, we have alot of traffic that drives by our house and I can go out and hang up clothes in my pajamas. Whenever we didn't have a fence, neighborhood kids would sneak over and get on our trampoline when we were gone. Your sister Kristi

I have mixed feelings about fences too. I would love to be able to walk around outside in my pj's, knowing that no one can see me. I would love to block all the neighbor's 'junk' from view. However, I would surely miss seeing them when they were out and about and I would miss watching their grandchildren play outside when they visit. I think I might get depressed if I knew they were on the other side of the fence and they didn't want me to see them. :-(

So.....maybe you could take down the chain link fence and sell it for some decorations to hang on the privacy fence?

Funny how the fence used to be the place we would gather and visit before our husbands would come home. Now many wish to be completely isolated and remove the neighborly world~sigh.

I share your dislike for privacy fences. This is definitely a new world we live in. Maybe it is why FB and blogging is so popular...we are a majority of people who like to talk over the fence or sit on the front porch and wave to people who pass by.

My Favorite Child

I wish I had all the pictures I wanted, to go with this blog post........because I know a *picture paints a thousand words*, but for a large part of our family's life, old fashion cameras and old fashion pictures were being used.  So, many of the pictures that would help paint this post are somewhere in boxes and books.  It would take a month of Sundays to find them all so  I will just have to count on your imagination and my memory!
