Lemons

When I think of a lemon, I think of many things.
I think of how special lemonade used to be. Now we drink it by the gallons and don't think a thing of it. Just run to the store and buy a big old lemon. Easy.
But I don't think it used to be so easy.
Just ask Pollyanna and Anne of Green Gables. And Laura Ingalls.
And just to think, sometimes it even had ice in it.
We don't appreciate ice any more than we do lemons.

Do YOU remember the first time you heard this? When life gives you lemons, make lemonade? I was in high school in an art class. I thought it was corny then, and I still do. Sorry.........

I also think of pirates. Pirates? Yes. Just think, if pirates, a long time ago, had lemons like they needed them, the world would be ran by pirates today. All those long sea voyages caused so many pirates to weaken and they could not fight like strong men could. Their lack of vitamin C brought on their demise. So, lack of lemons has probably saved the world from pirates. Of course, it hasn't saved the world from terrorists and liberal democrats, but at least there aren't very many pirates. But then, maybe we would be better off?

You can buy lemon perfume, shampoo, air freshener, candles, laundry soap and LOTS of lemon scented cleaners. The girls have always enjoyed Lemon Joy dish washing liquid. I have always enjoyed the girls doing the dishes..........
One of my favorite perfume/oil/lotion is lemon-grass. I love it in essential oil form and from Bath and Body. Lemons and cleaning just seem to go together. I prefer a lemony smell over bleach any day!!

I have heard some say that the lemon is the perfect food. I wonder if they meant Lemon Lush, or Lemon Pie, Lemon Poppyseed Cake maybe? Maybe they just meant a plain lemon? I've also heard that an egg is also the perfect food. Honestly, I think a good old cake donut is pretty perfect myself.

There is nothing more fun than adding lemon ZEST to a recipe. I purchased a really neat retro zester not too long ago. It really does the trick. Of course it works on limes too.
(do this:
zest a lime, a little honey, chopped up jalapeno and some bbq sauce.........add it all together. Yum)

There also wouldn't be anything more fun than to pick lemons off of your own tree. That would be right up there with having an avocado tree that had fruit every year. That hurricane winds didn't blow to Smithereens. In the middle of September.

When we eat out, I always order water. I honestly prefer water......and I really like a lemon in the water. I judge the waiter/waitress by this. Did they even take a second to plop a lemon in my glass? Most do not. I don't ask for one because then they bring you a whole bowl....like I might be part pirate and need my vitamin C.

And whose idea was it to squeeze lemons on fish? OH! I know! Long John Silver!

I will NOT drink lemonade Kool-Aid. Actually I won't drink Kool-Aid at all...........especially not lemon. How fake is that? If I'm going to drink 'fake', give me a diet caffeine free Coke.

A LONG time ago, when I was still a kid, I had my best friend over for the night. My mom warmed up some Dr. Pepper and squeezed a lemon into it. UGH. I don't recommend it. Sorry mom, don't make us any more treats like that please.

On a negative note.......who wants a yellow car? Where did that start anyway? Ha! Looks like you got a lemon!!
Lemons will also take the enamel off of your teeth. That makes them feel really nice.
Lemons are also bitter and nothing like an orange when it comes to just eating one. You can't even peel the silly things.

I read somewhere that lemon drop candies are the most swallowed candy. They are slippery and just right to swallow, I must agree. I don't eat them. I have never liked tart or sour candy. So, I'm safe from this problem.

"I can't live without lemons." Martha Stewart
Poor Martha.......lemons are nice, but I can live without them.
[She probably can't live without her 3 houses either.]

Remember this song from long ago?

Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet
But the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat
Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet
But the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat

I would love to smell a lemon flower!!

To end my little discourse on lemons, I will give you a couple Bible verses:

Ephesians 4:31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
Hebrews 12:15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

Don't be like a lemon......all pretty and shiny on the outside........bitter on the inside.

Leave a comment............what do YOU think about when somebody says 'lemon'?

But I do drink lemon koolaid ack! :) It and black cherry is probably my faves.
I like lemon pie too, but never make it. Lemons are readily available around here so they cost a LOT. It is few and far between to get to have the real deal.

I wish I had all the pictures I wanted, to go with this blog post........because I know a *picture paints a thousand words*, but for a large part of our family's life, old fashion cameras and old fashion pictures were being used.  So, many of the pictures that would help paint this post are somewhere in boxes and books.  It would take a month of Sundays to find them all so  I will just have to count on your imagination and my memory!
