Keepsakes

There are things in our homes that we would never get rid of.  Things others might look at and wonder why they are on a prominent shelf. Here are three of those kinds of things.....
The glass holder belonged to my Granma.  She lived in a very small two bedroom house.  There was a place for everything, and everything had a place.  (and the kitchen was NOT my place) I'm thinking my Granma always knew where everything was.....I can never see her losing her keys or her lipstick.  Or misplacing her glasses.
The little wooden piece in the back held the first Bible I ever read.  My mom made it in Sunday School and has kept it all these years.  It has an etched picture of a boat and billowing clouds on the front.  The Bible I remember of course was black, and the edges of each page were red.  All the time I was growing up, that Bible was in the little holder.  Truth was SO close and I never knew it.

John 5:39  Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

My Grandpa made the little iron for my mom and her sister.  It is a plain piece of wood with a drawer-pull attached to it.  Simple little thing, and worth keeping.  It's feels like it has been sanded, the wood is soft and smooth.  How easy it used to be, to amuse little girls.

What is on your shelf?

What a great idea for a blog! It's the simple things that mean the most. I have a tea set that was given to me by a special neighbor when I was born, a red kerosene lantern that we used for light when the electricity was off when I was a kid, some carnival glass that was my great grandmothers, a ceramic horse that my grandma gave me when I was about 12, and one of the most special items, not on a shelf, but in the safe is my grandma's 5 yr. diary that covers the years that my brothers John, Lloyd, and I were born.

My Favorite Child

I wish I had all the pictures I wanted, to go with this blog post........because I know a *picture paints a thousand words*, but for a large part of our family's life, old fashion cameras and old fashion pictures were being used.  So, many of the pictures that would help paint this post are somewhere in boxes and books.  It would take a month of Sundays to find them all so  I will just have to count on your imagination and my memory! FAVORITE: most liked, preferred above all others Sara, you were my favorite.  You were our first baby and we were so excited for you.  Your hair was perfect for me to learn how to braid and you always were very still for me.  You were the first little girl I got to dress up and put lacy socks on.  You were such a fun little girl to read to.  You memorized the books we had and it was a big part of our day to read with each other.  *where is the bear when the wind blows cold?*.    You have alw...
