Gardening, or the cultivation of fruits and flowers, may, in some sort, be regarded as the test of civilization.
It diffuses peace, contentment and happiness, stimulates and invigorates the mental and physical powers, promotes habits of industry and domestic frugality among the humbler classes, and places within their reach a large amount of luxury in the shape of delicious fruits and magnificent flowers.
