fun with the Smith girls............

Surrounded By Cement

We have been surrounded by cement for a majority of our married life. This means that our children have also been surrounded by the same thing. We have never lived on a farm, by a farm, or anything like a farm. We don't have a 2 acre garden, we don't raise llamas, we don't build fences for cattle and we don't have barb wire fences that need attention. We've never had chickens that needed a hen-house or a goat that needed a shed. The closest we've come to having 'animals' has been two bunnies in our back yard. And yes, when we had them, Daniel took care of them. So, what do you do with boys that are not in an environment that causes them to run in flowery meadows with collie dogs, dig holes for fences or paint boats? You FIND things for them to do. It is always nice to know that your sons can do dishes, cook a little bit and maybe even do some laundry........but this is NOT their realm. It will not be their role when they grow up, so while those t

Thursday Night....

We had a hoppin (as in frogs not rabbits) good time Thursday night with the Smiths...........in Galveston.......at the Rainforest Cafe. We experienced 3 thunderous rainstorms while we were there! Maybe more?

A disservice to your daughters............

Don't hinder your daughters? How? By doing everything for them. Why? Because they're so busy with their things, you think you ought to. I have 4 daughters and one mother and lots of friends, lost and saved. Many watch us and wonder why I do the things I do. I do lots on purpose, some is by accident and it turns out for the best, but lots of things I am working out a plan. My plan is to have my 4 daughters totally equipped to take care of a home, a house, living quarters, whatever. And yes, I know that isn't the only thing they need to know about being married, but it is a good start. Ever since I can remember with my daughters, these are some of the things I have done and put into practice, all for an end.......NOT just so I can have spare time........ do not iron their clothes unless they are so young there is a fear of burning themselves start them out on handkerchiefs, then skirts, then their own stuff, then dad's shirts if you iron for them when they're c

Weddings and Food

So, do you think it is kosher to ask others to bring food to a wedding? You plan a meal after the ceremony and you ask others to bring it. Is this out of line, to be expected, or either way? If you are planning a wedding and you want to have a nice meal afterward, should you pay for all of it? If you want a nice meal after the ceremony, but you don't really have the money, should you just NOT have it or is it fine to expect others to bring the meal? Is it a loving community that won't think anything of it? or should the parents and new couple not expect it? Would any parent expect any guest, friend or family to help pay for a dress that they could not afford? or decorations? or would they, as the parents, be expected to stay within their own spending limits? Is food something that we can ask people to take a part in concerning any planned event? Are things changing towards that direction, have they always been like this and I'm out of touch, or what? Is it o.k. to

Are you a heretic?

~~~~~~~~~~~Stokes, History of Baptists and Their Principles, “The following description of their character, furnished by an enemy, will best prove what manner of men they were. “Heretics are distinguished by their manners and their words, for they are sedate and modest in their manners. They have no pride in clothes, for they wear such as are neither costly nor mean. They do not carry on business, in order to avoid falsehoods, oaths, and frauds, but only live by labour, as workmen. Their teachers also are shoemakers, and weavers. They do not multiply riches, but are content with what is necessary; they are also temperate in meat and drink. They do not go to taverns, dances, or other vanities. They restrain themselves from anger, they are always at work, learning, or teaching, and so they pray but little. f34 and so they pray but little. f . They may also be known by the precision and. moderation of their language. They also abstain from scurrility and detraction, and levity in discours
Use your own tune.........
A little light is going by is going up to see the sky a little light with wings. I never could have thought of it to have a little bug all lit and made to go on wings.
Orange Dresses
A friend and I made 'orange' dresses for our daughters. I got some orange duck shoes for $2.00 each? at Payless, so I thought it would be nice to have a dress to go with them! This is what we both came up with!
A little poem to sing....
This is a little poem I had on the wall in the room I used to teach Sunday School.......I would sing it to the girls while they were coloring........ it is to the tune of: Deck the Halls OR Rueben Rueben Live for something be not idle Look about thee for employ Sit not down to useless dreaming Labor is the sweetest joy Folded hands are ever weary Selfish hearts are never gay Life for thee has many duties Live for something, while you may.
I didn't let him shoot.....
Our house has some foundation problems. It is good for one thing. FROGS. I was cleaning something the other morning and had the hose on and looked and there were frogs crawling out of the cracks in the sidewalk.
Remember the old Pink Panther cartoon?
His sidekick was an anteater (ardvaark?). They were both on skis, and the anteater went through a chain link fence and was all in pieces! Every time I see a fence like this, I think of that cartoon. Now it happened to my son.
I guess I'm not so 'bloggy' after all!
OR, maybe it's just that I am so many other things? I love to sew. I have been cutting out lots of things and on purpose not sewing them. I will sew them up later. I have proven to myself that if I cut something out, I will get around to finishing it! Friday night I sewed Lydia two dresses. One was denim with red on the other side with white dots! (actually a jumper) She wore it with a yellow t-shirt to the family reunion on Saturday. The other one was a sleeved dress from some really old fabric I found somewhere. It is pink gingham with flowers on the bottom that resemble an old pillowcase....the top is hard to explain. Olivia said it was the cutest dress she has ever seen in her whole life! Wow. I cut out Heather's dress she will wear to her sister's wedding. I am at a glitch but I think I can overcome. I cut out a size six dress lastnight........the fabric has old dolls on it. I am really going to snazz up the sleeves on this one. I cut out a mother/daught
